Madrid, Europe's Data Centre Leader
Investment in data centres in Madrid
In recent times, the predominance of physical infrastructure has been complemented by greater digital competitiveness. The substantial investments made over the last decade in expanding and improving the fibre-optic network, the increase in mobile connectivity, the notable concentration of neutral exchange points in the region that guarantee low latency (such as Espanix, NetIX and DE-CIX), investment in data centres and the progress of cloud region development in Spain by large multinationals such as AWS, Meta, Microsoft, Google, IBM and Oracle, together with the arrival of new transoceanic subsea cables, have not gone unnoticed by investors, entrepreneurs and professionals. In addition, Madrid’s geographical position makes it a crucial point of digital connection between continents.
The world of networks is undergoing a radical change, and demand for new digital services is accelerating the decentralisation of the Internet’s physical infrastructure. The need for alternative routes that do not depend on areas that are already saturated, such as the United States or the cities of Europe’s FLAP-D axis (the traditional European data centre corridor), has encouraged the growth of Madrid’s digital profile in the European context.
Madrid, a benchmark in digital connectivity
Today, the Community of Madrid is a benchmark in the Iberian Peninsula and in Europe in terms of digital connectivity. With an extensive and advanced fibre-optic network that by mid-2022 covered 98.7% of homes in the region, and practically universal mobile broadband coverage (99.9% with 4G coverage and 91.6% with 5G), the region stands out as a leader in digital transformation, enabling businesses to operate continuously in a global market. https://www.comunidad.madrid/noticias/2024/04/04/comunidad-madrid-aumenta-56-potencia-instalada-centros-datos-2023-consolida-su-liderazgo-nodo-digital
